Since returning to Florida, I haven't really missed winter. I don't miss freezing in my Florentine little apartment and how it took twenty minutes to pile on everything and get out the door. And I definitely don't miss wearing tights every day. I do, however, miss layering and all of the fun accessories. So, it was nice to break out some of my favorite winter accessories again last weekend in NYC.
I wore my new pink gingham popover with my favorite pastel plaid scarf. I kept the rest of my look simple with black, but added a touch of pink with my sunglasses and gorgeous long gloves I purchased in Prague. This was also the day that Emily and I had our hair done at the TRESemme style studio, so I had a fun braided faux-hawk to complete the look.
I love mixing all patterns in unexpected ways, but I really love mixing plaids, especially this time of year. There is just something about chilly weather and the holidays that suits plaids perfectly. Our last day in Paris was particularly rainy and chilly, so I bundled up in my favorite plaid popover (which has recently been released, yay!) and my oh-so-warm plaid blanket scarf. Love or hate the blanket scarf trend, you have to admit they are amazing in cold weather!
The key to successfully mixing plaids is to following one of these methods: 1) Mix two plaids that have a similar color palette, but are inverted (i.e. one with a light-color base and one with a dark-color base). 2) Mix plaids that have complimentary colors (like red and green for the holidays!). 3) Mix plaids that have similar colors, but are different in size.
Mixing plaids (and prints for that matter) is definitely a bold look. But what's not to love? And there are so many great plaid pieces available at the moment. This skirt and this popover are definitely on my Christmas wish list!
After a cold and rainy first day in Paris, Britt and I were excited to get a little reprieve from the rain on our second day in the city. It was still a very cold morning, but at least the rain didn’t arrive until the afternoon.
We started our day with breakfast at Laduree and then took advantage of the dry weather and headed to my favorite bridge, Ponte Alexandre III. After snapping some photos we strolled down Rue Saint-Dominique, which gives a great view of the Eiffel tower. We walked all the way to the Champ de Mars before the rain and wind struck.
For the occasion, I wore my new plaid dress from Brooks Brothers that my friend Kelly was kind enough to hem and bring to Florence for me. I wasn’t exactly prepared for the last minute cold snap, but fortunately Kelly also brought me my yellow J.Crew peacoat, which kept me nice and toasty. I love the bright yellow color of the coat paired with this navy and black plaid dress.
To escape the cold and ridiculous wind that arrived that afternoon, Britt and I scurried to the Musèe d’Orsay, which not only has an amazing collection of impressionist and post-impressionist art, but also was exhibiting a special show on nineteenth century prostitution in Paris. The show was fascinating to say the least and I highly recommend it.
After a long and cold day, Britt and I warmed ourselves with some hot wine and yummy falafels (I am obsessed with the falafel in Paris) before collapsing in our hotel room.
On another note, I hope everyone had a happy Thanksgiving yesterday. I have to say it was weird going to work. Fortunately, Jen hosted a wonderful dinner at her house complete with turkey and stuffing! I am sad I am missing all the great shopping today (my yellow coat is on super sale), but it is probably for the best!
